The New Year...in Japan
Being half a day ahead of the majority of you (assuming the majority of our readers are US East-Coast), today is New Years Eve. Which means, in less than 12 hours, we’ll have to fill out dates as 2011 instead of 2010. HOWEVER, this being Japan, it is obviously not the case; for the coming year, we get to write 平成(Heisei) 23. In Japan, the more official the document, the less frequent you...
It’s officially Christmas in Japan! Happy Christmas to you. We will NOT be dining at KFC tomorrow unlike the rest of Japan (they actually take reservations on Xmas- not kidding). Instead, we will be on a mission to find brie and other fine cheeses. Karaoke is also on the agenda.
Today we leave for a 12 day trip through the Kansai region! We’re very excited to visit some of Dave’s old stomping grounds when he was studying abroad. We will be spending the first 8 days in Osaka - hopefully taking a few day trips to Nara and Kanazawa. Then we will be heading to Kyoto and Kobe for 2 days each! We should have internet so we’ll try to post as many neat things as...

More Animals! v. Wild Boars

Today, while I was driving home from work, a small, slightly-larger-than-a-squirrel animal darted across the road. A couple seconds later, its friend ran in front of my car as well. Upon closer inspection, I realized that these animals weren’t freak squirrels, but in fact MONKEYS! I slowed down to get a closer look, and they look like some sort of baboon (though I’m no zoologist).
Heat
Apartments in Japan have no central heating; all heating is done by small space heaters. This lack of heat is compounded by the fact that a lot of japanese domiciles have horrible weather-proofing, making them incredibly draft. Currently, its probably around 8C in our apartment.
Wild Monkeys
The school I go to on fridays is pretty far into the mountains. So far, in fact, that it gets snow when nowhere else does. Anyway, I was driving home when I saw a weird statue looking thing on a road about 30 feet up from the one I was driving on. It looked like a little statue posed like the terminator Terminator 1/2 when hes traveling through time (/end NerdRant). I stop my car and look out...
